The Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management (EBFM) plan for the Lower Bua River was launched on Friday 26 April at the Chizuma community ground in Nkhotakota, Malawi.  LUANAR participated in the event in the person of Ms Thokozire Gwaza Kwalira, with support from Live Streams.

The launch event was designed to publicize the EBFM plan and provide opportunities for networking among key stakeholders.  The aims of the plan are to ensure the long-term health of fish stocks and freshwater ecosystems, supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities and fostering responsible fishing practices in the Lower Bua River system.

Mr. Symon Kamowa Ngwira, District Fisheries officer for Nkhotakota, explained to participants that the EBFM plan contributes to national targets in a ten-year plan  to achieve sustainable utilization of fisheries resources in Malawi.  The chairperson for Nkhotakota District, Mr. Charles  Chimzukuzuku, signed and formally launched the plan.  He stated that "The launch of this plan symbolizes the beginning of a new era of sustainable fishing techniques, ensuring that future generations will profit from the fishery of Lower Bua River.”
