We have provided a new grant to Amani Friends of Nature (AFON).  This builds on AFON’s earlier work, also supported by us, to protect the habitat of the critically endangered Amani Flatwing damselfly (Amanipodagrion gilliesi).  The grant will enable AFON to help implement key elements of a management plan developed with local communities and other partners.  Activities include deepening community engagement and providing alternative facilities for washing clothes and collecting drinking water.  This will reduce disturbance to the stream where the damselfly and other vulnerable endemic species are found.  Monitoring of the distribution and abundance of the target species will also be carried out.  Victor Mkongewa will again coordinate activities, working in close collaboration with local communities, local government and the Tanzania Forestry Service.
